A squad of 23 City of Norwich swimmers enjoyed a highly successful 2018 East Region Age Groups Championships.
Olivier Vedrenne had a superb meet claiming the top boy award in his age group. Swimming personal bests in all 11 of his events Olivier won 5 gold medals in 50, 100 and 200 metres breaststroke;1 silver medal in the 200 metres freestyle and 1 bronze medal in the 400 metres freestyle. Olivier now tops the 13 year old British Rankings in 100 and 200 metres breaststroke.
13 year old Ruby Greenhalf saved her best for the final evening having qualified for the 200 metres freestyle final with a pb placing 5th in the heats. In the final Ruby swam a brilliant last 50 metres moving up from 5th to 2nd and posting a 4 second pb to touch in 2:16.69. Ruby swam big pbs the 50 and 100 metres freestyle finals placing 6th in both. She posted a 3 second pb in her 200 metres breaststroke to touch 7th in the final and a 5 second pb in her 200 metres IM saw her place 9th.
Charlotte Abramson stepped up in her 100 metres breaststroke final when it mattered most to pb in 1:17.93 and claim the silver medal in the 14 years. In the 200 metres breaststroke Charlotte placed 6th and swam good pbs in her 50 metres butterfly and 50 metres backstroke.
14 year old Alex Lowry swam a big pb in the 50 metres freestyle 26.01 to claim the bronze medal. He also pb’d in his 100 metres freestyle just missing the medals in 4th place.
Lily MacDonald is having a very strong season making big improvements. Lily claimed the bronze medal in the 13 year olds 50 metres freestyle in 28.73. Lily also made the 100 metres freestyle final placing 7th.
In the 14 year old boys Luke Barton equalled his pb in his 1500 metres freestyle in a very tough race placing 4th just missing a medal. He swam a great 400 metres IM to pb placing 5th and posted another pb in his 400 metres freestyle finishing in 8th place.
Niamh Sadler swam an excellent 200 metres breaststroke final just missing the medals in 4th place. She also swam good pbs in her 50 and 100 metres breaststroke. Also swimming in the 14 year olds Grace Gunton made her first regional final placing 7th in her 50 metres breaststroke.
The weekend saw 11 year old Grace Greenhalf swam a brilliant 100 metres butterfly to make the final in a tough double band 11/12 year old age group and place 5th (top 11 year old). She made 10th in the 50 metres butterfly (also top 11 years), placed 11th in her first long course 200 metres butterfly (3rd 11 year old), 13th in the 50 metres breaststroke (2nd in 11 years) and 17th in the 100 metres breaststroke (2nd 11 year old).
Also 11 years old, Lewis Andrews swam a brilliant pb in his 50m breaststroke placing 11th in the 11/12s (3rd 11 year). Mabel Gigg likewise swam a pb placing 23rd in the 11/12s 50 metres butterfly (3rd 11 year). Sophia Pickering swam a huge pb in the 50 metres backstroke to place 19th in the 11/12s (3rd 11 year). Sophia was also 4th 11 year old in her 50 metres freestyle.
The future looks very bright with this group of strong 11 year olds.
In the 13 year olds George Grice made a 4 second pb in a very well paced 400 metres IM placing 7th and Anna Browne swam an excellent pb in her 200 metres breaststroke placing 8th.
Other City of Norwich swimmers competing at the championships were Akshay Pissay, Ayesha Kamara, Eve Parke, Isabelle Kenworthy, Isla Winslow, Jack Abram, Lucy Hutchinson, Leo White and Shannon Stubbs.
