Norfolk Junior league straddled 2016/2017 this year and the final on the 4th February 2017 proved to be an exciting evening of swimming with our junior swimmers set with the challenge of pulling back 41 points from the first round.
Both teams from UEA City of Norwich qualified for the ‘A’ final at Dereham Leisure Centre and a sea of blue and white was dominant around poolside. Racing was fast and furious and trying to keep track of the scores proved very challenging. Our swimmers were amazing, winning 11 of the 13 relays in the gala. In three events our two teams took 1st and 2nd places – Joe Hammond and Alex Saling in the 25m freestyle; Macey Pountain and Natasha Lee in the 50m backstroke and our 9 year olds showed their strength in the mixed 9-year-old relay.
Strong swimming from Lewis Andrews – 25m backstroke and butterfly; Leah Bushell – 50m backstroke and butterfly; Olivier Vedrenne – 50m breaststroke and butterfly and Akshay Pissay –
50m freestyle and backstroke all winning both their individual swims.
The gala finished with an extremely exciting Cannon relay but nobody knew the final scores. Waiting for the announcement of the results was tense, but we needn’t have worried, we won the gala by 50 points to Norwich Swan and won the league!
Incredible teamwork was evident throughout the gala, great racing by our swimmers, fantastic work by our team managers and brilliant support from parents and families. Well done UEA City of Norwich juniors – Norfolk Junior League champions 6 years in a row! Another team shot for good measure…
